Flower Mound is an incorporated town located in Denton and Tarrant counties in the U.S. state of Texas. Located northwest of Dallas and northeast of Fort Worth adjacent to Grapevine Lake, the town derives its name from a prominent 12.5-acre mound located in the center of town.
After settlers used the site for religious camps during the 1840s, the area around Flower Mound was first permanently inhabited in the 1850s; however, residents did not incorporate until 1961. Although an effort to create a planned community failed in the early 1970s, Flower Mound's population increased substantially when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened to the south in 1974. Flower Mound is the largest town in terms of population in Texas, and the only town with a population greater than 20,000.
Flower Mound's municipal government has invested in a public park system highlighted by an extensive network of trails. The town's public schools comprise part of the Lewisville Independent School District. In 2012, Flower Mound was ranked at #8 as one of the Best Dallas Suburbs according to D Magazine.
Flower Mound public schools rank fourth among 2018 Dallas suburbs with best public schools and its principal high schools, Flower Mound High School / Flower Mound Ninth Grade Campusand Marcus High School / Marcus Ninth Grade Campus, rank sixth and eighth among the 2018 best open enrollment high schools in the DFW metroplex. Flower Mound also has the tenth lowest overall crime rate and its prevailing tax rate is in the bottom quartile of property tax rates in the Dallas area.
Flower Mound is located in south central Denton County, approximately 28 miles northwest of downtown Dallas and 33 miles northeast of downtown Fort Worth. As the DFW metroplex continues to grow and becomes more densely populated, Flower Mound's proximity to DFW International Airport, the Las Colinas business center and downtown Dallas is likely to make Flower Mound residential real estate even more desirable than it is now for people who need to commute frequently to and from these areas.
